FUNDAMENTALS 4: NORTH-SHOUTH/PINWHEEL SPIN/HIGH BACK FINISHING SYSTEM

Here is a video-flash-cards montage of one of my favorite drill series: the NS/Pinwheel Spin from Headquarters passing. This drill series shows you how well the Kimura, Armbar, Chairsit Backtake, and RNC finishes work together with the “Pinwheel Spin” manuever.

This method of spinning to the offside top control from your guard passing when the opponent tries to go belly down to defend the guard pass is also referred to as “far-side passing,” so this drill series is showing the fundamentals finishing options we have from far-side passing.
STRATEGY NOTES ON PASS-TO-FINISH PATHWAYS:
The first objective in passing should be to establish top control by getting the opponent’s shoulders flat on the mat with either the seatbelt shoulder pressure, which, if successful, will allow us to ratchet that seatbelt to take mount and ultimately finish with the S-Mount Armbar if not an Arm Triangle. Winning the pass to side control and progressing to seatbelt ratcheting and mount finishing is incredible powerful, but it’s made even more powerful by having this series as a sort of backup-plan when you are not able to pin their shoulders flat.
Conversely, spinning to the back, north-south kimura, etc. in this pinwheel farside pass-to-finish drill series will be far more effective for you if you are really trying to pressure down and finish your pass to side control, really trying to pin their shoulders flat to the mat. Then when the opponent is able to get on their side and get the underhook, starting to power up on you, you’ll be able to see it coming and catch the timing of it much better by having slowed them down with your pressure, slowing down the timing of the exchange making it easier to hit your pinwheel spin.
Seatbelt ratcheting and kimura/backtake are two complimentary and highly interconnected finishing pathways. We should take a yin-and-yang approach in our game and keep a good balance between mount finishing and back finishing. Both positions allow us to loop submission attempts over and over until we get the finish, and both finishing pathways are made stronger by putting them together.
